I received a copy of Ugly Beautiful from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Ugly Beautiful is a novella length story of about 130 pages. It is a horror story about a young man named Jason whose father is a crime boss. Jason himself is a conflicted gangster who makes a living working in his fathers organization and lives a pretty posh life because of it. With a beautiful wife and a baby on the way, he seems to have it all until he stumbles upon a secret that shatters his picture perfect world and everything spirals out of control.
I haven’t read many Horror books this year so I was really interested to read this story and get spooked. This book was definitely not what I expected! It went in a totally different direction that I thought it would which was really cool, I love when writers do that. It was very graphic and definitely creepy in some parts. I found myself just pleading for things to turn out okay for our main character. I didn’t one hundred percent like our protagonist but I didn’t one hundred percent hate him either. I guess I felt bad for him a lot of the time as I was reading the book because he seems to get the short end of the stick and ends up in crazy situations when it really seems like he wants to change and be good deep down.
I enjoyed the psychological thriller aspect of the story though I definitely wish the story and some of the scenes were much longer as I think that would have drastically impacted the story. I liked the story itself, I thought it was entertaining and freaky to read with the graphic terror scenes and I felt like I was there. I thought the writing was good overall but there were definitely a lot of spelling errors that to another reader, might have impacted their enjoyment of the story. I tend to try to look past these things at the overall story but it is worth mentioning.
I ended up giving this book a three out of five stars because I definitely enjoyed it and liked the story. I feel like more background detail about the sisters and their upbringing and maybe more time for the feelings between Jason and Haley to develop would have resonated more with me as well. Overall, I liked this story and would read more from the author. This book had a few excepts from his work at the end of it and there were a few that I will be looking forward to reading, especially Alone which kind of sounds like it may be Sci-Fi from its synopsis, I’m definitely checking that out. This novella is a super light read so if you are looking for a light, creepy read you may enjoy this one. Happy reading!
