Grace is a young woman who is no longer content with the normalcy of her life. Her parents passed away a long time ago, she doesn’t keep in contact with her drug addict brother, she works in a job that isn’t satisfying and she has only one friend to her name. Besides all of that, Grace is a young woman with darker needs that are no longer being satisfied with what she dubs “play kink” and is looking for something more than the normal d/s relationship. Through the grapevine she learns of the island of Eleu where pretty much anything goes. Eleu is an island independent from any country where submissives literally give themselves over as “slaves” to their dominants, relinquishing their rights completely. Grace is intrigued and decides to give herself to Lucas, the handsome and mysterious stranger she has been conversing with through IM and webcam. But when she gets to Eleu, she soon finds that her life with Lucas is not what she had hoped for or been led to believe…that is until beautiful, blue eyed Asher buys her from her cruel master and mends her broken spirit.

I have to be honest and say that I was initially just drawn to the cover of this book. It’s beautiful and dark all at the same time. I didn’t know what this book was about when I bought it but I absolutely fell in love with the cover and had to have it.

If you are new to erotica I wouldn’t really recommend jumping into it with this story, I don’t think it’s for the faint of heart. The Fifty Shades of Grey crowd may like Asher but may want to stay away anyway. I hear them complain about Anne Rice’s Sleeping Beauty trilogy (why anyone would ever complain about it I don’t know, she’s a genius) so this may not be their cup of tea but it was really really good.

I have read a few erotica novels but I have only read two that are graphic and dark and have heavy BDSM (so I’m an erotica noob), this one is one of them. I was pretty worried about how I would react to the book but I have to say that I ended up really liking it. I really liked the writing, I thought it was beautifully written. I will be reading more Kitty Thomas in the future. I love the pacing of the story and I definitely could not put it down. Of course I probably gasped out loud like a million times because of how crazy it got at some points and how bad I felt for Grace when she was with Lucas. I thought the story itself was interesting and it was really interesting to see the d/s dynamic and the comparison with how brutal Lucas is to how loving Asher is (in his dominant way) to Grace. It definitely had me on the edge of my seat, wanting to know what was going to happen next. It was such a unique story for me because I’m not well experienced with Erotic Literature which is one of the reasons why I decided to join the erotic literature challenge. In a way this is definitely a love story, a d/s love story, but nonetheless a love story.
